Cherie Mittenthal (b. Connecticut 1963) is a Provincetown based artist working primarily with encaustic. At times tar, marble dust, pigment sticks, graphite and other mediums are integrated into her paintings.
Mittenthal’s practice explores the ritual of layering, the unexpected scents and anticipation of moving and carving through wax. Her current body of work is redolent of the meeting of sky, sand and sea, while the subject of earlier work often includes animals, birds and still life.
Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout New England and New York. She has been the Executive Director of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Truro, MA since 2002, and is the co-producer of the International Encaustic Conference, Provincetown, MA.
Mittenthal received her BFA from the University of Hartford, Hartford Art School, Hartford, CT and her MFA from the State University of New York at Purchase, Purchase, NY.
