Cherie Mittenthal

With a background as a printmaker & bookmaker, Cherie Mittenthal became aware of wanting her work to be more immediate. Though continuing to work in many mediums: wax, tar, marble dust, oil sticks, graphite and others, over the last seven years she has worked predominately in wax or encaustic. Mittenthal’s recent work is concerned with the ritual of layering. “I am exploring the spaces between structure, fluidity, density, and the visible effects of light through pigment to create a moment in time. I love the sense of the unexpected, the sensation of scent, and the anticipation evoked by moving wax. Marrying image and medium is what I am most interested in.” Cherie Mittenthal earned an MFA from the State University of New York at Purchase and a BFA from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. She has been the Executive Director of Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill since 2002.
