About the Artist

Diane BrawarskyDiane Brawarsky

The female figure is my medium and the way I tell my story. Her shape and mood change and the way she is drawn is an integral part of my process. The figure, built through a method that incorporates fabric, found objects, pages of old books and other ephemera, embodies the spirit of the painting. These materials are imbued with personal history that affects the way I integrate them into the work. I often etch words and sentences into the paint, leaving faint suggestions of the thoughts I had while painting. The words are added for the visual richness or enhancement to the surface. Often I leave the texts legible, effectively adding context to the painting.

Another important dimension to my work is the use of found objects. These three-dimensional pieces interact with the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. I play with these objects in two ways. In some paintings I use the object as it is; while in other work, I take the object out of its original context and use it based on its shape, color, or other characteristics. This disrupts its perceived or conventional purpose, but meshes well with the whole piece.
