About the Artist

Jo Hay

Jo Hay was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in 1964. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from Middlesex University in London and her Master of Fine Arts, Cum Laude, Class of 2012 from the New York Academy of Art. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree, Hay worked for Rupert Murdoch Publications as an art director in London.

She then moved to New York City and studied painting at The Art Students League while maintaining her career as an art director for Condé Nast Publications. In 1996 she exhibited her first piece at the Curt Marcus Gallery in New York City. Since then she has continued to show her work in New York and Provincetown.

Hay’s work explores an understanding of the duality of each individual human psyche and how the internal balancing of the ‘male’ and ‘female’ directly affects both the perception of self and the physical body. She is most interested when the shift becomes more extreme, and society’s visual stereotypes, female/passive, male/active, are challenged and confused.
