About the Artist

Marian RothMarian Roth

Visual artist Marian Roth has been living and working in Provincetown since 1982, and has been working with pinhole imagery for more than twenty years. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship and Massachusetts Cultural Council Artists Fellowship, as well as a fellowship and residency from the C-Scape Dune Project to convert a dune shack into a camera. In the fall of 2012, Marian converted the concession stand at Herring Cove Beach into a camera as a part of the Ten Days That Shook The World Festival. A radio portrait of this project was recently broadcast by the local NPR station as a part of their Creative Life Series. Her work has been featured in many pinhole text books and has been shown internationally.

As a painter, Roth aims to achieve the same kinds of feelings invoked by her pinhole imagery - among them a sense of being in place. "I am not really interested in making ‘landscapes’ or ‘seascapes’ per se, but rather in imagery that deals with a more complex and idiosyncratic relationship between the self and the world.”
