ALTERNATIVE WAX

Encaustic Conference Juried Group Exhibition
plus feature solo show by Kobalt artist CHERIE MITTENTHAL.

JUNE 2-8
RECEPTION FRIDAY JUNE 2, 7-9pm

Kobalt Gallery presents “Alternative Wax – Layers of Facts”, a special juried exhibition of works in conjunction with the Eleventh Annual International Encaustic Conference. The exhibition will feature 12”x12” works by 40 encaustic artists whose introspective and engaging interpretations of this politically charged theme show offer equal doses of both humor and horror regarding America’s new reality. “Alternative Wax” is paired with a feature solo show of new work by Kobalt Gallery encaustic artist Cherie Mittenthal.

During the 2016 “never a dull moment” presidential campaign season, a number of new catch phrases were indelibly coined into history – perhaps most memorably “alternative facts”. Recognizing our First Amendment rights and the continuing need for dialogue surrounding the events and outcome of the race,“Alternative Wax” embodies the idiom “a picture is worth a thousand words” – each piece offering a volume of personal insight within each layer of wax.

Working predominantly in wax for over a dozen years, local Provincetown artist Cherie Mittenthal’s encaustic paintings intrinsically call on her own sense of presence and place, while ultimately invoking the same from those who view her work. Mittenthal’s practice explores the ritual of layering, the anticipation of scraping, dripping and carving through wax and deliberating the transparency and opaqueness of each layer. Her latest work often incorporates a smaller painting adhered to the surface to create an alternate form of depth and interesting juxtaposition. Mittenthal is the Executive Artistic Director of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and the Director of the International Encaustic Conference.
