GUEST ARTIST MAURA SEGAL
plus Group Exhibition of work by all roster artists.
RECEPTION FRIDAY AUGUST 4, 7-9pm
Los Angeles based painter Maura Segal joins Kobalt as a guest exhibitor in her solo feature “Hidden Pathways”. Deeply inspired by the Los Angeles landscape and lifestyle, from the sun-drenched plants to the bustling network of intertwining urban roads and intersections, Segal creates abstract, multi-layered artworks from papers, new and antique, combined with acrylic paint on canvas. She feels a relationship between these coexisting elements reflected in the juxtaposition of dense, geometric paper forms and the free, expressive and rhythmic lines.
Segal’s background in graphic design plays a big part in her compositions, engaging the entire canvas to explore the interplay between positive and negative space. Even the frequent runoff of the design onto the sides of the canvas is key to perpetuating the sense of a continuum. Close observation of Segal’s work reveals the synergy between the layers of papers, often subtle enough to miss at a glance, however, crucial to the over all cadence and balance of each piece. “The creative process for me, is more instinctual than rational. I follow what I’m feeling, don’t plan out the final piece and embrace the happy accident”.
Segal received her BA from California State University, Northridge in graphic design. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections.
