RECEPTION FRIDAY JULY 20, 7-9pm
You’ll be filled with fond childhood memories while joining the chorus of those shouting, “I had one of those when I was a kid!”, upon seeing painter Ted Polomis’s latest work in his first solo show at Kobalt, “Toy Stories”. Vintage objects and toys from Polomis’s collection of keepsakes become memorialized on canvas in his classic style, but scarcely without the artist’s inclination to add a contemporary spin to his paintings.
Polomis takes us back to the late sixties with “Water Beatles”, a hat tip to the Fab Four that will unquestionably plant the lyrics and melody of “Yellow Submarine” in your head via this wonderful depiction of the band members aboard a novelty replica of their fantasy vessel. In a purely nostalgic composition, “A Stitch in Time” exquisitely captures an antique hand crank Singer Sewing Machine for girls atop Polomis’s trademark white ledge. The use of muted primary colors for spooled threads and draped fabric that appear dimensional enough to pluck from the canvas, counterbalance perfectly with the complexity of the machine itself. Constant throughout his work, Polomis’s focus is on creating compositions that reveal the interplay between objects and their environment, and the harmony that results from balancing form, color, light and shadow.
Ted Polomis is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and was elected to the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy, where he spent his junior year. Influenced by the works of the Great Masters he studied throughout Europe, Polomis’s paintings have received numerous awards, and have been featured in many publications including American Art Collector, International Artist, and The Artist’s Magazine.
Meet the artist Friday July 20th from 7 to 9pm.
