JUNE 28 -JULY 4, 2019

Kobalt Gallery is pleased to welcome painter Paul Balmer to the roster with a solo exhibition of his latest work.  Influenced by a range of painting traditions from impressionism and expressionism to tribal art, Balmer (b. 1964 Durban, South Africa) works in a unique style of his own, his unmistakable canvases prioritized by color, light and perspective.

Balmer’s iconic skylines tower against vibrant backdrops dotted with sailboats adrift a distant waterway, subtly contrasting urban existence with life’s more leisurely occupations.  Likewise, his still life paintings are an exercise in balance between complexity and simplicity, with rich colorful surfaces etched and sanded to reveal hidden layers beneath the intricate lines that detail his subjects.  As his paintings continue to evolve, the colors, shapes, and primitiveness of his work remains notably reflective of his roots in South Africa and Australia.

At seventeen Balmer moved to Australia where he studied Fine Art at the Drawing School in Sydney, and Graphic Design at the Sydney Institute of Technology.  After university he spent several years working in illustration and advertising in Australia and America, and eventually left commercial art and moved to Europe to pursue his passion for painting. Moving to New York City in 1999 was a turning point in his career, and what started as a journey into traditional academic painting gave way to works of the imagination. Balmer’s work is exhibited domestically and abroad, and is collected worldwide.

Meet the artist Friday June 28th from 7 to 9pm.
